Summer Reading 2024 -- Upper School: 2024 Award Winners

Award Winners and Honors 2024

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The award is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Winner is listed first, followed by Honor titles.

Each year, librarians and teachers in CT  are chosen to serve on the Nutmeg committee. They chose 10 books at four different age levels to be considered for the Nutmeg Award. Students in CT in grades 2-12 are then encouraged to read the nominees and vote for their favorite. 

Winners are followed by next year's nominees (Note: I have only included the 3 levels that apply to SLS students and the last category is high school, so make sure the books are developmentally appropriate before reading)

Intermediate (grade 4-6)

Middle School (grades 7-8)

High School (grades 9-12)

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.  The award is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, and sponsored by Booklist.

Winner is listed first, followed by Honor titles.

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. The award is administered by the American Library Association's Ethnic and Multicultural Exchange Round Table (EMIERT).

Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe New Talent Author Award

The YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction honors the best nonfiction book published for young adults (ages 12-18) during a Nov. 1 – Oct. 31 publishing year. The award is administered by the Young Adult Library Servies Association, a division of the American Library Association.

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award is given for the most distinguished informational book for children.

Winner is listed first, followed by Honor titles. 

The Schneider Family Book Award is given to books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience.

Middle grade

Teen

Stonewall Book Award - Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award is given annually to English-language works of exceptional merit for children or teens relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender experience. The award is administered by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table of the American Library Association.

A Middle-grade book won the award and two won honor awards. 

Young Adult winner is followed by honor books. 

The Pura Belpré Award is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. The award is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA affiliate.

The Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature promotes Asian/Pacific American culture and heritage and is awarded based on literary and artistic merit. The award is administered by the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), an affiliate of the American Library Association

Middle grade

Young Adult 

The Sydney Taylor Book Award is presented annually to outstanding books that authentically portray the Jewish experience. Presented since 1968 by the Association of Jewish Libraries, an affiliate of the American Library Association, the award encourages the publication and widespread use of quality Judaic literature. 

The Gold Medalist is followed by the Silver Medalists

Middle grade

Young adult

American Indian Youth Literature Awards are announced in even years (e.g. 2022, 2024, 2026) and were established to identify and honor the very best writing and illustrations by and about American Indians and Alaska Natives. Selected titles present American Indians in the fullness of their humanity in the present and past contexts.

William C. Morris Award is given for a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens.

Winner is followed by honor titles. (Note: these are books for teens except for the last title, Once There Was)
